Escalating Prices Of Food Contributing To Increase Of Child Malnutrition At Household Level

By Prudence Siabana

The civil society scaling up nutrition alliance has called on government to address the escalating prices of food as this is going to increase child malnutrition at household level.

CSO-SUN national coordinator Mathews Mhuru has told phoenix news in an interview that the food prices have devastating effect on the health of poor households by making it more difficult for them to afford healthy food.

Commenting on the December 2019 basic needs and nutrition basket report which reviewed that a household needed K6, 600 to meet their needs, Mr Mhuru says the food basket is an indication that most families cannot afford to meet the required amount.

Mr Mhuru predicts that further increase in the price of basic commodities including food due to the hike in fuel and electricity tariffs, households headed by women and children are the most vulnerable as the monthly cost is far out of reach.
