Environmentalist Calls For Total Ban On Use Of Plastic Bags

By Penjani Banda

Environmentalist, Robert Chimambo has called for a total ban of the use of plastic bags regardless of the thickness.

Mr Chimambo says the ban on use of plastics of less than 30 microns in thickness has had less positive impact on the environment hence the total ban on the use of plastic bags totally should be considered.

Mr Chimambo in an interview with phoenix news feels the positive impact made following the ban effected by the Zambia environmental management agency (ZEMA) last year is insignificant.

He is of the view that ZEMA should have imposed a total ban and eliminate all plastic bags from the environment. But when reached for a comment, ZEMA communications and cooperate affairs manager Irene Chipili says despite facing some challenges in the implementation of the ban, positive impact on the environment has been made as people have reduced plastics littering.
