Environmental Standards In Zambian Mines Continues To Deteriorate After Privatization Of The Sector

By Chileshe Mwango

Environment Conservationist Robert Chimambo has charged that environmental standards in Zambian mines have been deteriorated since the country’s privatization of the sector.

In an interview with Phoenix News, Mr. Chimambo alleges that current mine owners have prioritized profit making at the expense of maintaining the environmental safety standards they found after taking over the running of the mines from Zambia Consolidated Copper Mines -ZCCM-.

Mr. Chimambo has accused the mines of degrading the safety standards due to lack of care for the harm they are causing adding that the situation has even been worsened by what he says are compromised institutions and officers who fail to implement the law.

Meanwhile, Mr. Chimambo has expressed concern that most Zambians are ignoring the harm being caused to the environment by people mandated to protect it on their behalf.
