The Engineering Institution of Zambia -EIZ- has called on government to overhaul drainages and some bridges across the country in order to manage floods better.

EIZ President ABEL NG’ANDU says most the drainage infrastructure in the country is outdated, making it difficult to withstand effects of climate change such as floods due to heavy rain.

Mr NG’ANDU says the infrastructure should be redesigned to take into account changes in catchment areas, water patterns and river systems.

He says the institution is ready to work with Government to roll out a comprehensive drainage redesign program.

Meanwhile, speaking in a separate interview a University of Zambia Professor of Water Conservation says indiscriminately dumping of garbage is contributing to floods.

Professor NYAMBE IMASIKU also called on households to adopt water harvesting methods in order to have an alternative source of water away from the utility service.
