ENGAGE MORE-ZRA

The Zambia Revenue Authority has called for regular stakeholder engagements on tax remittance to avoid unnecessary penalties emanating from unknowing defaulting.ZRA Commissioner Domestic Taxes Moses Shuko says ZRA places stakeholder engagement as a priority area and stated that the real estate agents are a key partner.He says it is through regular engagements with stakeholders and taxpayers that the authority gets feedback, advice and share guidance on tax reforms being implemented.Mr Shuko was speaking during a stakeholder engagement meeting with Estate Agents in LusakaHe said the money ZRA collects is for the benefit of everyone and will be used for national development through the provision of services and Infrastructure development.Mr Shuko said the authority cannot fulfil this mandate alone but needs the involvements and participation of stakeholders and taxpayers.He revealed that currently the Authority is collecting income tax on real estate through withholding tax on rental income.The Commissioner Domestic Taxes further said withholding tax it is not a new tax but has been existence for more than 20 years.He however encouraged the real state member to be up to date with tax remittance to avoid penalties and other sanctions.And Zambia Institutions of Estates Agents President Brian Tembo said his administration will not allow agents to default taxes.Mr. Tembo said tax defaulting deprives the country economic development and should not be condoned.He called on state agents to constantly engage ZRA for clarity on matters that they may not be conversant with.Mr Tembo however commended the authority for its open-door policy and adopting an approach of engagement with taxpayers to make them understand the importance of paying taxes.
