JAPAN’S Emperor Naruhito has today formally proclaimed his ascension to the throne in a colorful enthronement ceremony held at the Imperial Palace in Tokyo, Japan.
Emperor Naruhito, 59, proclaimed his enthronement before Leaders and representatives of more than 180 countries and about 2,000 Japanese guests.
President Edgar Lungu was represented by Minister of Foreign Affairs, Joseph Malanji who was accompanied by Zambia’s Ambassador to Japan, Mrs. Ndiyoi Muliwana Mutiti.
In his formal proclamation, the Emperor swore to act according to the constitution and fulfil his responsibility as the symbol of the state.
 “I pledge hereby that I shall act according to the Constitution and fulfill my responsibility as the symbol of the State and of the unity of the people of Japan, while always wishing for the happiness of the people and the peace of the world, turning my thoughts to the people and standing by them,” Proclaimed the Emperor.
And speaking after attending the enthronement ceremony in Tokyo today, Mr. Malanji said President Lungu and Zambia wish Emperor Naruhito good health as his role in affairs of Japan and the world is critical.
Mr. Malanji said Zambia’s attendance at the ceremony signifies the depth of the relationship with the people of Japan.
The Minister said Zambia looks forward to more engagements with the Emperor and the Government of Japan in strengthening bilateral relations.
Emperor Naruhito officially began his reign on 1st May, 2019 after the abdication of his father, Emperor Akihito Emeritus; being the first Japanese emperor to do so since 1817.
