EIZ to Probe Poor Contractual Works

The public outcry on how easily some roads and bridges crumble have caught the attention of the Engineering Institution of Zambia that has promised to investigate the matter.

EIZ president President Sydney Matamwandi has said investigations have been instituted among some of its members over allegations of negligence on some of the projects.

Matamwandi said reports of poor workmanship on the Kitwe – Ndola dual carriageway, a ward at the University Teaching Hospital among others are some of the projects that have been brought to their attention.

Speaking during the Northern Region Banquet in Kitwe, Matamwandi said the profession will not tolerate any unprofessional conduct as that was putting the institution into disrepute.

“Council will look at complaints of professional misconduct among members, we have received various complaints and it is time for us to act. The due process of law will be followed. All reports will be investigated and appropriate action will be taken. The complaints received so far include Kitwe – Ndola dual carriageway of being poorly executed, suspected negligence on the construction of a ward at UTH, suspected negligence on renovation of Kasaba bay, complaints on a project at a named lodge in Western Province, some of our members are culprits,” he said.

Matamwandi has also defended the institution from attacks of being ineffective response to engineering queries in the country.

“We have seen other so called processional bodies which are essentially just small clubs organising big parties and talking big, making all sorts of pronouncements, the Engineering Institute of Zambia remains a professional body and will stick to its lane in national debates. Our expertise is engineering and engineering only, so we will only comment on that and nothing else. Professionals are professionals and politicians are politicians you can only be one,” Matamwandi stated.
