Edward ‘Tiger’ Chilufya on target…action for Emmanuel Banda..as title charge in tatters for Djurgårdens

Swedish-based Zambian international Edward ‘Tiger’ Chilufya scored a goal in Djurgårdens IF’s shock 2-3 home defeat to Varberg in a league encounter.

Djurgårdens came into the match positioned second on the league table, one-point shy of log league leaders, Malmö FF.

As only two matches of league are left to play, the encounter was very crucial with both the League title and Sweden’s only UEFA Champions League place at stake.

Zambian winger, Edward Chilufya was named in the starting eleven while Emmanuel Banda started from the bench.

For all their dominance in the first 30 minutes, Djurgårdens were made to pay when Alexander Johansson nodded in a cross from a corner kick to hand the visitors a surprise lead.

The concede goal seemed to inject purpose into the host’s attack with Chilufya setting the tone.

In the 36th minute, the former Mphande Youth man skillfully skipped passed two defenders on the right wing, before unleashing left-footed strike that produced a good save from the keeper.

More opportunities for an equalizer followed but none were as close as Djurgårdens’ captain, Magnus Eriksson’s saved penalty deep in injury time of the first half.

Shortly after the restart, the hosts did get their deserved equalizer courtesy of Chilufya’s headed finish – his 8th goal of the campaign, to the delight of the home crowd.

Not long after Chilufya’s leveler, the visitor re-took the lead through goals scored in a seven minutes interval by Ryan Moon (1-2) and Albin Winbo (1-3) respectively.

Emmanuel Banda came off the bench

Emmanuel Banda was introduced in the 75th minute for a role in the middle of the park.

The hosts piled more pressure, and were rewarded for their efforts when substitute Joel Asoro, who replaced Chilufya in the 88th minute, pocked home a goal in injury time (2-3).

Following this afternoon’s defeat to Varberg, Djurgårdens’ title hopes are all but over as Malmö FF edged Kalmar by a-goal-to-nill to extend their lead at the summit to 4 points.

There is still plenty left to play for going into the final day of league action next weekend with Europa League places still up for grabs.
