ECZ Will Not Disqualify Lundazi Candidate

Wina-ECZThe Electoral Commission of Zambia says Lundazi Central Independent candidate Evans Ngoma will not be struck off the ballot despite having rejoined the ruling Patriotic Front after filing in his nomination.

And the ECZ says a person may be free to contest elections after he has served his sentence.

The theatrics around the Lundazi seat started with the PF adopted candidate Dr John Phiri failing to file his nomination while Ngoma who was overlooked filed as an Independent candidate.

However Ngoma u-turned his decision and rejoined the PF with the ruling party announcing that it will throw its weight behind another Independent candidate Colonel Bizwayo Nkunika.

ECZ public relations officer Chris Akufuna said that once a person’s candidature was validated after nominations there was nothing the institution could do.

He said that the ECZ will consider Ngoma as an Independent candidate in the election despite his switch back to the PF.

Akufuna also said there was nothing wrong with ex-convict George Mpombo for contesting elections.

Mpombo who recently announced his backing of the UPND candidate Hakainde Hichilema has not gone the whole mile in joining the opposition party and will go solo as an Independent candidate.

The former defence minister served his sentence for a crime of fraud he committed while serving in government.
