ECZ Threatens To Suspend Campaigns In Wake Of Violence
The Electoral Commission of Zambia has shown growing impatience with the incidences of political party violence in the country threatening to suspend campaigns.
Violence seems to have become the operative word for campaigns among leading contenders for the August 11 elections leading to the ECZ to strike a tough stance.
ECZ public relations officer Chris Akufuna said the institution could invoke its powers to suspend campaigns and ban political parties fanning violence against contesting elections.
Akufuna warned that the law provided for political parties and even candidates to be banned from participating in elections if certain conditions like violence persisted.
He said the reports of violence among rival supporters was slowly slipping out of hands and needed to be halted.
On another front the ECZ met with heads of public media institutions to re-enforce the need for fair coverage of all participating political parties in the elections.
Akufuna said it was expected that all players in the election are given coverage by the public media in the spirit of free and fair elections.
