DRC,Sudan conflicts irk AU

The Africa Union has called for accelerated efforts in addressing the insecurities called by war in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo and Sudan.

African Union Commission Chairperson Moussa Faki Mahamat stated that the wars have led to humanitarian crisis and caused massive damage to infrastructure in the two countries.

He stressed that the humanitarian crisis have also started to affect other countries that are hosting the refugees.

He was speaking when he opened the one day extra ordinary international conference of the great lakes region summit on peace and security on DRC and Sudan .

He however commended the peace efforts of régional bodies such as SADC and the East Africa Community and the United Nations in trying to resolve conflicts in the two countries

Presidents from the DRC , Central African Republic, host Angola attended the Summit while Zambia was was represented by Defence Minister Ambrose LUFUMA .

Other countries were represented by senior government officials.

Angolan President JOAO Lorenco underlined the need to create condition for the process of disarmament of M23 rebels in the DRC.

Mr Lorenco who is also president of the ICGRL said he had made efforts to talk the leaders in Sudan to resolve the conflict in that country.

He has since proposed for another summit that will include regional and international bodies .
