DRC Borders with Zambia Shut in Election Alert

As the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) goes to polls today , Zambia is on high alert following their announcement that all entry points to the neighbouring country will remain closed until further notice.

Home Affairs Minister Stephen Kampyongo has announced in Kitwe that his office has received correspondence that Mokambo, Sakanya and Kasumbalesa border points on the Copperbelt will be closed to allow for the holding of elections.

Kampyongo has since advised those planning to visit the Democratic Republic of Congo to adjust their schedule until after elections.

He said the Immigration department has also been directed to screen people that will be on transit to the DRC and may not have received information on the latest developments.

“We have received c communication from the Congolese Immigration authorities to the effect that when they go to polls all borders on the other side will all be closed. So members of the public who wish to travel to the DRC through these border posts being Kasumbalesa, Mokambo and Sakanya they must take notice of that, we will however continue to engage with our counterparts on the other side,” Kampyongo stated.
