‘Don’t hide disabled children’

By JAJAH COULIBALY –
CHESHIRE Homes Society of Zambia programmes manager Musonda Siame has charged that parents with a habit of locking up their disabled children are ignorant and need counselling.
Mr Siame said it was inhuman for a parent to discriminate their own child because they were deformed or physically challenged.
He was speaking after receiving reports of some parents who were allegedly locking up their disabled children so that they could not mingle with other children who were not disabled.
Mr Siame added that parents needed to be aware that there was a service that could improve their children’s condition using various training skills.
“It is unfortunate that some parents still lock their disabled children and I think all that is because of ignorance,” he said.
Mr Siame said the organisation was embarking on a sensitisation project aimed at educating parents especially mothers in peril urban areas.
“I think we have a task to do as Cheshire Homes Society of Zambia which is a community -based rehabilitation programme,” he said.
