DMMU COMMENDS LIVESTOCK MINISTRY

(NAIS ) The Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit -DMMU- has commended the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock for enhancing capacities of vulnerable communities.

DMMU National Coordinator Chanda Kabwe says the provision of livestock by government has built resistance of vulnerable communities to natural disasters such as disease and climate variabilities.

Mr. Kabwe says disasters are costly to respond to and commended the Ministry of Fisheries for providing livestock to communities affected by COVID-19 and climate change.

He said this in a speech read on his behalf by DMMU Assistant Director of Early Warning and Preparedness, Titus Ng’andu, during the handover of livestock in Nakonde by the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock.

And Fisheries and Livestock Minister Nkandu Luo disclosed that 1-hundred and 62 groups from all the wards in Nakonde district have been empowered with livestock from the 2-hundred thousand United States Dollar Covid-19 relief package.

Professor Luo said besides providing relief, the 4-hundred goats, 40 cattle and 2-thousand chickens handed over are meant to make cooperatives rich enterprises.

Meanwhile, Nakonde Member of Parliament Yizukanji Siwanzi said the livestock will boost the economy of Nakonde which has been ravaged by the Covid pandemic.

Mr. Siwanzi says the major business activity in Nakonde, which is clearing and forwarding, has been negatively affected by the Covid-19 pandemic.
