DICKSON MAKWAZA DIES

Former Zambia National Football Team captain and Mufulira Wanderers Coach Dickson Makwaza has died.Makwaza who suffered from a liver infection died in the early hours of this morning at Ndola Teaching Hospital on the Copperbelt.His son, Linos Makwaza confirmed the death to ZNBC News in Kitwe.The funeral is being held in Luanshya at House Number 50, Ghana Circle Road.Meanwhile, Nkana Coach Beston Chambeshi says he will remember the late Makwaza as a father and leader on and off the playing field.Chambeshi says the contribution Makwaza made to the football fraternity in Zambia cannot be ignored, as he was a brilliant coach.And Football Association of Zambia -FAZ- President Andrew Kamanga says the game has lost one of its greatest icons.Kamanga says the late Makwaza, who was also a FAZ Life Member was recognizable by his humility despite his achievements in lifeMakwaza was one the longest serving captains of the Zambia National Football Team, formerly known as KK11.He captained Zambia at the 1974 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt where the KK11 emerged runners-up to the then Zaire.Nicknamed ‘barbed wire’ in his playing days, Makwaza coached Zambia at the 1988 Seoul Olympic Games where the team reached a historic quarterfinal finish.He has died aged seventy-seven and is survived by seven children and seventeen grandchildren.
