DAVIES CHAMA PREACHES FOOD SECURITY

By Etambuyu Katota:

Defence Minister Davies Chama has challenged the Defence Forces to utilise more land for agriculture to safeguard the country’s food security.

Mr. Chama says the country has more than 40 million hectarage of arable land with less than 4 million being utilised for agricultural purposes.

He says if the country utilises about 10 million hectares of its land for agriculture, the country will reduce its dependence on copper.

Speaking when he launched the Zambia Air Force -ZAF- Chisamba farm in Chisamba District, Mr. Chama commended ZAF for responding to President Edgar Lungu’s directive for the Defence forces to engage in economic activities.

And ZAF Commander Major General David Muma said currently the farm has grown maize on about 50 hectares that will produce about 30 thousand by 50 kg bags.

General Muma said the maize will be supplied to the Food Reserve Agency, FRA.

He urged officers that have been resistant to the idea of farming to take part as food security for the nation is part of the National security.
