CUTS promotes responsible debt management and increased oversight mechanisms for consumer protection.

Lusaka, Zambia24 (24-05-2023) – Consumer Unit and Trust Society (CUTS) International Zambia is working to educate and sensitize the public about sustainable debt management and enhanced oversight mechanisms.
CUTS International Zambia Chapter Programs Officer, Sylvia Kagulurah, spoke to journalists about the high levels of public debt in Zambia, which stood at over 150 percent of the gross domestic product in 2013 and has continued to increase.
She stressed the importance of prudent and frequent monitoring of how the government spends its funds, particularly as more resources are being allocated to the social sector.
Kagulura highlighted the enactment of the public debt management act in 2022 as a positive development that aims to address weaknesses in the legal framework for debt management.
She said CUTS has launched a project to strengthen coordinated advocacy strategies amongst civil society organizations, the media, and other stakeholders to promote transparency and accountability in debt management and social sector spending.
“The project CUTS has embarked on will promote of responsible debt management and increased oversight mechanisms for consumer protection, as well as their efforts to engage a wide range of voices in advocating for improved service delivery and monitoring of social sector spending,” she said.
Through a series of activities, including workshops, conferences, and capacity-building initiatives, CUTS aims to engage a wide range of voices in advocating for improved service delivery and monitoring of social sector spending.
She emphasized the importance of engaging with traditional and community leaders to identify critical areas for social sector delivery and to develop consolidated advocacy strategies that represent their different needs.
Kagulura also disclosed that CUTS’ project seek strengthen coordinated advocacy strategies amongst civil society organizations, the media, and other stakeholders to promote transparency and accountability in debt management and social sector spending, and to engage with traditional and community leaders to identify critical areas for social sector delivery.
