… Nair says media houses should motivate journalists to highlight issues surrounding debts at the grassroots level

Lusaka, Zambia24 (24-05-2023)  – Consumer Unity and Trust Society (CUTS) International Zambia Chapter has encouraged the media to feature stories of debt issues facing Zambians at the grassroots level.
CUTS International Zambia, board member Sajeev Nair told journalists when he officially opened a one-day media training on Sustainable Debt Management and Oversight held at the Pamodzi that CUTS, the high debt profile in the country has presented numerous challenges, affecting individuals and communities negatively.
CUTS is a non-governmental organization that works to promote consumer protection, trade, and good governance, among other issues. The organization has been advocating for debt transparency and sustainability in Zambia.
Nair said a high debt profile presents significant challenges such as reduced government social spending and increases in the cost of living.
In addition, Nair individuals and communities face difficulties in accessing basic services, such as health care and education.
He said Nair speaking out on debt issues can expose people to risks, such as harassment, arrests, and intimidation.
He observed that many individuals are afraid to speak out, which makes media coverage of debt issues essential in highlighting these challenges and creating public dialogue.
Besides encouraging media coverage, Nair said CUTS also runs various programs aimed at supporting people impacted by debt issues.
For instance, Nair explained the organization works with communities to create awareness of debt management and budgeting, enabling them to handle credit better.
