Lusaka, Zambia24 – (22-08-2024) – The Consumer Unity & Trust Society (CUTS) has commended the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development for taking action against noise pollution and unregulated alcohol sales in residential areas.
CUTS welcomed the Ministry’s directive requiring municipal officials to submit inspection work plans and reports to enforce the Liquor Licensing Act and control noise levels.
Nancy Mwape, Communication Officer for CUTS, highlighted public concerns over the impact of unregulated bottle stores, shabeens, and bars on communities, including noise disturbances, disorderly behavior, and increased crime.
“The Ministry’s efforts to restore order in our communities are crucial,” Mwape stated. “Unregulated alcohol sales and noise pollution have disrupted the peace and safety of residential areas.”
CUTS also pointed out the issue of grocery stores allegedly operating as unlicensed bottle stores or shabeens after hours, calling on the Ministry to conduct unannounced inspections and address violations immediately.
CUTS emphasized the importance of rigorous enforcement of laws related to noise and alcohol sales, reaffirming its commitment to protecting consumer welfare and community well-being.
