Copper Queens midfield general returns to action after a one-year injury lay-off

Copper Queens midfield general Rhoda Chileshe on Wednesday made a return from injury and put in a full shift as Indeni Roses played to a 1-1 draw away Nkana Queens.

Chileshe played the whole 90+ minutes and put up a decent performance. She was heavily involved in the buildup play for the two disallowed goals for Indeni Roses.

Chileshe has been out of action for over a year after she sustained a knee injury on 5th March 2020 when Zambia suffered a 3-2 away loss to Cameroon in the Olympic qualification tournament. She made a short return before the start of the league but got injured days before the start of the new season.

Her return to action is expected to ease coach Bruce Mwape’s concerns and worries with midfield options ahead of the team’s historic appearance at the biggest sports fiesta, the Olympics, especially that Mary Mwakapila has been ruled out of the tournament.

The Copper Queens were on Wednesday drawn in a tricky Group F for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. Bruce Mwape’s lasses will face Brazil, Netherlands, and China who will set an Asian record with their sixth participation at the biggest sports festival that kicks off in July.

The Copper Queens are currently in camp preparing for the tournament. They started their preparations in November last year when they beat Chile 2-1 before going on to lose 3-1 to South Africa earlier this month.

The Olympics will officially run between 24 July and 9 August 2021, but sporting action kicks off two days before the opening ceremony with preliminary women’s football matches set to light up the occasion for various sports disciplines.
