Confusion: ECZ to accept Nevers Mumba’s application

MMD President Dr. Nevers Mumba speaks to the Clergy from various congregations at Victory Ministries in Kasama on 11th February 2016

The Electoral Commission of Zambia says it will proceed with the application of ‘ousted’ MMD leader Nevers Mumba as the party’s Presidential candidate in this year’s elections.

ECZ Public Relations Manager Chris Akufuna told Hot FM News that as far as the Commission is concerned, Dr. Mumba has paid his nomination fee to contest as MMD Presidential Candidate in this year’s general polls.

The former ruling party has been split into two factions after the Felix Mutati-led group successfully held a convention to replace Dr. Mumba with the former Lunte Member of Parliament. The convention also elected a new National Executive Committe (NEC).

The faction further resolved to go into an electoral pact with the ruling PF, meaning its leader Mutati will not take part in the presidential election but will endorse the candidature of President Edgar Lungu instead. However, they have indicated that they will field candidates at parliamentary and local government level.

But the Mumba faction insists that the former republican Vice-president will be the MMD presidential candidate and have gon ahead to pay the presidential nomination fee.
