Chipolopolo, Bafana Bafana renew rivalry

Zambia will this afternoon lock horns with South Africa in an international friendly match in Rustenburg at the Royal Bafokeng stadium at 15:00hrs.

South Africa are likely to be without Lebogang Manyama with the experienced playmaker having missed the match against Namibia due to an injury. Ntseki has confirmed that Thulani Hlatshwayo, Themba Zwane, and Percy Tau will return to the starting line-up after being rested in midweek.

Bafana will look to Percy Tau who plays in Belgium for RSC Anderlecht and is one of the versatile players on this South African side.

Meanwhile, Chipolopolo will be without their skipper Kabaso Chongo, who was expelled from the camp by the technical bench with reasons yet to be known as they only said it was due to technical issues.

Sredojevic selected a squad made up of mostly Zambia-based players and a few foreign-based players which include Klings Kangwa, Evans Kangwa, Fashion Sakala, Gamphani Lungu, and Edward Chilufya.

Chipolopolo will pin their hopes on Evans Kangwa, Emmanuel Chabula, and Collins Sikombe with the Napsa Stars marksman having netted the only goal which earned Chipolopolo a win over Malawi in Lusaka on Wednesday while Chabula netted the consolation goal against the Harambee Stars.

Other key players who could cause trouble to Bafana Bafana are Klings Kangwa, Fashion Sakala, and Zesco United midfield maestro Kelvin Mubanga Kampamba who has registered two assists already to his name in games against Malawi and Kenya.

South Africa are undefeated in their last two matches having secured a win over Sudan, before drawing with Namibia. Bafana is also enjoying a three-match unbeaten run at home having registered two victories and one draw.

Zambia, on the other hand, is struggling at the moment having lost three of their last four matches against Algeria, Zimbabwe, and Kenya.


Micho’s side is also winless in their last two away games having recorded two successive defeats on the road.

Bafana and Chipolopolo have met 23 times since South Africa was re-admitted to Fifa in 1992.


The two teams have met 23 times with Zambia registering 7 wins compared to South Africa’s 8, while 8 matches ended in draws.

The last meeting between the two teams ended in a 2-0 win for Bafana in a Four-Nation Tournament in Ndola, Zambia in March 2018.
