WE are surprised that relevant authorities are not pouncing on fresh food traders at Katambalala market in Chipata Compound, says a residents representative Michael Tambatamba
Mr Tambatamba said on Monday that traders at the market were still selling fresh food products such as meat, chickens, fish among others in dirty surroundings.
“These people are selling their food within dirty surroundings on makeshift tables. The same market has no toilets and to make matters worse, some people use plastic bags and empty packets of opaque beer such as Shake- Shake which they use to relieve themselves,” said Mr Tambatamba
The resident’s representative concerns comes after recent repeated calls this year by several residents in the area to have the market shut.
In October last year , a cholera outbreak had resulted in approximately 5,900 cases and 114 deaths.
Government improved the water supply and administered oral cholera vaccine, but flooding led to a resurgence of cholera.
Health and other stakeholders implemented a multisectoral and well-coordinated response was key to the control of the outbreak.
