Chiengi Man Dies after House Catches Fire

A 21 year old man of Chiengi of Luapula Province has died while another is nursing injuries after they house they were sleeping caught fire.

Police Spokesperson Esther Katongo said the incident happened when sister to the deceased identified as Suzan Chabu, 35, was frying relish which led to cooking oil spilling on the fire that resulted in a huge flame.

Katongo said the flames immediately spread through the grass thatched house leaving the deceased with severe burns after he attempted to rescue the sister who had been engulfed in the fire but got trapped.

The two victims of the Democratic Republic of Congo origins were rushed to Chiengi District Hospital where the deceased died of severe burns.

The deceased identified as John Mwakwa, a DRC national.

Katongo said 35 year old Suzan Chabu who is seven months pregnant is still admitted in Chiengi District Hospital while the body of the deceased is lying in the same hospital mortuary.
