Chief Chikanta bemoans high levels of GBV

ZANIS-CHIEF CHIKANTA of Kalomo in Southern province says Gender Based Violence (GBV) limits the full potential of women and girls to contribute to their personal and nation development.

The chief also urge other traditional leaders to help balance powers between women, men, girls and boys to reduce GBV in their chiefdoms.

And officially launching the 16 days of activism against Gender Based Violence at Chungu palace yesterday, Kalomo district commissioner challenged all stakeholders to take this period seriously to address the vice.

He says the New Dawn government attaches great importance fighting against GBV hence the placement of the gender component under the office of the president.

The 2018 Zambia Demographic Survey states that 65 per cent of the GBV perpetrators are current partners with more than 52 per cent of women who never seek help for post violence support over sexual, physical, economical or emotional gender based violence.

The launch of the 16 days GBV activism in Kalomo was organized by the Zambia Centre for Communication Programme (ZCCP – Kwatu) through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and funded by the Presidential Emergency Plan for Aids Re
ief (PEPFAR) under the theme, ‘Orange the world: End violence against women and girls.’
