CHAZ to engage disabled on cervical cancer

By CHIPEMA SAKAIMBO –

CHURCHES Health Association of Zambia (CHAZ) has announced that it is considering engaging persons with disabilities on their cervical cancer sensitisation programmes.
CHAZ information officer Musonda Chipili said Zambia had a population of 3.21 million women aged 15 years and above who are at risk of developing cervical cancer, a percentage that includes the disabled.
Ms Chipili said cervical cancer was the second frequent cancer in women in Zambia and was also common among women between 15 and 44 years of age.
She said cervical cancer can be prevented and cured when people access the right information concerning the disease.
Ms Chipili added that that was the reason the organisation wishes to extent the message to persons with disabilities before it affects them too.
She said it was very vital to intensify the sensitisations because cancer of the cervix accounts for 40 per cent of all cancers treated at the cancer diseases hospital in Zambia.
Ms Chipili said the human papilloma viruses that cause cancerous diseases were extremely common in Zambia that was why HPV vaccine was introduced to prevent cervical cancer which was slowly becoming common in Zambia.
She said the HPV vaccine which was transmitted through sex was only effective when administered to a girl who were not sexually active.
Ms Chipili, however, expressed concern that CHAZ could not successfully reach out to all the women due to some circumstances so that other stakeholders were able to help.
