CHAIN STORES COMPOUNDS? VEEP

By ZANIS:Vice President Inonge Wina has noted that the opening of supermarket chain stores in compounds disadvantages local traders, who cannot compete with chain stores.Mrs. Wina says the extension of supermarket chain stores to compounds may result in the collapse of small businesses and loss of livelihood among traders. The Vice President said this in a statement issued to ZANIS by the Permanent Secretary in the office of the Vice President for Administration Stephen Mwansa. She stressed that the development is against the pro-poor social and economic development agenda of the Patriotic Front Party.Mrs. Wina has since directed the Ministry of Local Government and Ministry of Commerce, Trade and Industry to guide and work closely with Local authorities so that business development is attained without sacrificing marketeers and traders in compounds. The Vice President said the directive does not take away the recognition of foreign chain stores as an important source of diverse products, a market for local producers and a source of empowerment for many Zambians.Mrs. Wina has since advised traders and marketeers to keep their surrounding clean at all times.
