The Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC) says it in the first half of 2018 confiscated and destroyed various goods worth eighty-eight thousand, five hundred kwacha (K88, 500) across the country, most of which had expired or were about to expire.

CCPC Executive Director, Chilufya Sampa has told a media briefing that carbonated drinks topped the list of the goods confiscated and destroyed.

Mr. Sampa says the commission has observed that most companies manufacturing carbonated drinks are selling almost expired or expiring drinks to consumers in the rural areas.

He says during the same period, the commission resolved a total of 1,193 consumer infringement rights cases and successfully recovered over K1, 200, 000 in product services refunds and replacements.

Mr.Sampa has also disclosed that the first six months of 2018 has seen an increase in the volume of cases related to Anti Competitive Business Practices and Consumer Right Infringements.

And Mr. Sampa says the commission in the first half of 2018 received 51 merger notifications with an approximate value of US$70.9 million.

He says this represents an increase of 38 percent when compared to the 37 merger notifications received during the same period last year.

Meanwhile Mr. Sampa says the commission handled a total of 8 cartels in the wholesale and retail services, agricultural and livestock sectors in the period under review.
