Cancer Diseases Hospital to be revamped

By Esther Kabwe

Works to renovate and re-equip the Cancer Diseases Hospital  in Lusaka are expected to start in last week of April to early May 2024.

Health Minister SYLVIA MASEBO says the Contractor that will carry out the rehabilitation works is Siemens Healthineers,   a global leader in healthcare innovation.

Ms MASEBO says the project will be done in two phases and is expected to run for a period of 18 months.

She says upon completion of the project, the cancer disease hospital should establish itself as a regional center of excellence for cancer detection and treatment.

Ms MASEBO said this in a ministerial Statement on Cancer Treatment Services at the Cancer Diseases Hospital.

And, Ms MASEBO said currently the hospital’s radiotherapy equipment is currently nonfunctional, patients requiring radiotherapy are being referred to India as an interim measure.

Ms MASEBO said the process for referral to Tanzania took longer.

She said  so far close to 80 patients have been sent to India and this is being  done in groups of 20, with the 4th group of patients having left on 13th of March and are currently receiving treatment.

The fifth group of patients will soon be leaving the country for India.
