Can the ‘Moses of our time’ deliver ZANACO to a fifth ABSA Cup final

Football is a team sport but almost every team has one player who sometimes seems to carry the weight of the team.

Barcelona has Lionel Messi, Juventus have Cristiano Ronaldo, Luyando Foundation Girls has Evarine Susan Katongo, The Copper Queens has Barbra Banda and this season, Sensational Zanaco has Moses Phiri.

The ‘Moses of our time’ keeps showing up every time the bankers require some creativity or a goal.

Just recently Social media was awash with the debate of him being the ZANACO All-time top goalscorer or not but that’s a story for another and who really cares at this point looking at how good his form has been both for country and club.

With ZESCO United in complete control of the league at this point (Yes it’s far from being over and Zanaco has a huge chance to win it), The Bankers are however just 2 games away from ABSA Cup glory.

On Saturday, they take on Lusaka Dynamos at Arthur Davies Stadium in the first of two semifinals. And if the Bankers have to carry the day, Moses Phiri will have to be at his best.

In the prestigious ABSA Cup, he has managed to score 3 goals, in 2013 against Nchanga Rangers, in 2015 against Nkwazi FC, and one goal against Kabwe Warriors in 2021.

ZANACO lost the final to ZESCO United in 2019, 4-1 at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium, but with Moses Phiri and his current form on their side, the title and the K600 000 it comes with may just be within their sites.

ZANACO has been to four ABSA Cup finals winning just one in 2017 when they beat NAPSA Stars 2-1 at the National Heroes Stadium. They lost to ZESCO United in 2010, 2015, and 2019.

After all, is said and done the question remains can ‘the Moses of our time’ deliver Zanaco to the promised land of a fifth ABSA Cup final and a possible second title? Only 90 minutes will tell on Saturday.
