CAF gives guidance on the format for the CAF Women’s Champions League

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has provided guidance with regards to the format of the Inaugural CAF Women’s Champions League which is expected to take center stage during the second half of 2021 and will eventually be held annually.

Following a CAF Executive Committee Meeting which was held on 10th September 2020 via video-conference, a number of decisions were made over different upcoming events and amongst the decisions made was that the Inaugural CAF Women’s Champions League tournament is expected to feature eight(8) teams drawn across the continent from the Six Zones(CECAFA, COSAFA, UNAF, UNIFFAC, WAFU A, WAFU B) will start with Qualifiers to determine the Eight(8), finalists.

According to a press release on the CAF website monitored by the ZamFoot Crew, the following breakdown will be followed.

“The breakdown is as one team from each zone, one team from the host country, and one additional team. For the maiden edition, the zonal union host country will have two representatives. However, for subsequent editions, the host country will have only one representative whilst the Zonal Union of the defending champion will qualify two teams.” CAF statement read.

The eight qualified teams will be drawn into two groups of four teams each in accordance with the regulations.

Meanwhile, The Total Women’s Africa Cup of Nations will be held in 2022 and will be preceded with the Qualifiers and later on followed by The final tournament which will be played in July 2022.

The process of launching Bidding rights for both the 2021-22 CAF Women’s Champions League and also the 2022 Total Women’s African Cup of Nations has since been opened to its member countries.
