Zesco United salvaged some pride when they came from behind to beat Asante Kotoko 2 – 1 in the final round of games of the group stage of the CAF Confederation Cup.

The Zambian champions went in the game knowing they had no chance of qualifying to the next stage, but the Ghanaians had a chance of qualifying if they picked a win.

It looked a 50/50 affair with both teams creating chances but the Jacob Banda was the busier of the two goalkeepers in the first half as he pulled of key saves.

But the best chance of the first half fell to Zesco United when Jesse Were’s shot was saved by the keeper but Kambole pounced on the rebound only to see his shot come off the upright.

After the restart, Asante Kotoko decided to introduce an attack minded player Nyarko. A counter attack which started on the right was finished off by the substitute within a minute after the restart to give Kotoko the advantage.

Zesco started the come back in the 54th minute when Kambole ran into the box on the right channel to square a ball which was easily tapped in by Were.

They completed the comeback two minutes later when midfielder Kondwani Mtonga blasted home from inside the box for the second.

The George Lwandamina coached side easily saw off the game to ensure they finish with a decent seven points (level with Kotoko) but with an inferior head to head record.

However, the significance of the result was that Kotoko’s loss paved the way for Nkana who were being battered by Al Hilal at the same time in Sudan.

Al Hilal qualify as group leaders on 11 points while Nkana qualify as the second placed team on 9 points.
