BROWN STREAK VIRUS INFECTS OVER 2,000 HECTARES OF CASSAVA CROP

Cassava fields in Chifunabuli District in Luapula Province have been infected by the Brown Streak virus.

Chifunabuli District Senior Agricultural Officer, GREENFOLD MUSONDA says 2,367 hectares are affected leaving over 8,000 families vulnerable to hunger.

Mr. MUSONDA says the department of agriculture has since requested relief food to help families combat the hunger while provision of disease free cassava cuttings will be given to the affected farmers to plant in the coming rain season.

He has also disclosed that the department is conducting sensitization programs on the management of the disease.

Mr. MUSONDA has however stated that the department can only fully implement the sensitization programme when the disease-free cassava cuttings are received.

The Cassava Brown Streak is a viral disease that damages the root of the plant causing losses to quality and production.

ZANIS reports that the cassava brown streak has spread to Nchelenge, Chienge, Chifunabuli and Kaputa districts
