APPLY YOURSELVES-WOMEN TOLD
By ZANIS;Government has challenged women to fully apply themselves and take agriculture as a business in order for them to thrive and generate income for their livelihoods.Gender Minister Elizabeth Phiri has also encouraged women to move away from total dependency on maize.Ms. Phiri also urged women to grow other cash crops like cassava, soya beans, ground nuts and many others.And Ms. Phiri says Government has noted that women empowerment is one of the key components in improving the lives of vulnerable people in society especially those in rural areas.Ms. Phiri who is also Kanyama Member Parliament said this today, when she handed over gardening equipment to women clubs in Mkushi and Chisamba Districts in central province.And speaking on behalf of the 11 Women Clubs in Mkushi, Bibian Mwelwa expressed happiness, saying that the empowerment is a dream come true for women of Mkushi.Ms. Mwelwa said it has been very difficult for women to fully engage themselves in agriculture using traditional farming equipment like hoes.Earlier, Mkushi District Commissioner Luke Mwamba informed Ms PHIRI that, Mkushi is poised to produce a bumper harvest during the 2019-2020 farming season owing to the good rainfall the region is currently experiencing.Eleven women clubs in Mkushi and five in Chisamba received gardening equipment under the women empowerment programme government has initiated through the ministry of gender.Some of the equipment which was handed over to women includes peanut butter crinder machines,oxcart trailers, ploughs, wheel barrows, feeders, horse pipes and sprayers among others.Mkushi North Member of Parliament Doreen Mwape, Senior District government and Patriotic Front -PF-officials among others were part of the audience that attended the event.
