Anthrax outbreak contained

(NAIS) Government says it has contained the anthrax outbreak in the country.

Fisheries and Livestock Minister MAKOZO CHIKOTE is also optimistic of lifting the ban on livestock movement, slaughter and trade from the affected areas before Christmas.

Mr. CHIKOTE says the country has in the past three weeks not reported any new cases of anthrax since the disease broke out in July in Southern, Eastern and Western Provinces.

He disclosed this in Gwembe district in an interview with NAIS during his Anthrax sensitisation and monitoring wrap up visit of Southern Province.

Meanwhile, Mr. CHIKOTE disclosed that the government has already procured about 1.5-million doses of the Anthrax vaccine from South Africa worth about three-million kwacha.

And Southern Province Veterinary Officer WILFRED TEMBO said over 74 percent of cattle has been vaccinated against anthrax in the province.
