“AMEND FORMER PRESIDENTS ACT”

BY MASAUSO MKWAYAYA

Former Administrative Assistant in the Office of the Fourth President, MIKATAZO WAKUMELO has called for amendment of the Former Presidents ACT.

Mr WAKUMELO says this is in order to include provisions, which will allow Offfices of Former Head of States to continue operating even after their death.

He has explained that the current provisions require an Office of a Former President to wind-down within 3-months of the death of a former leader.

Mr WAKUMELO has added that the amendment will allow for proper management of records and history, regarding the work of a deceased former President.

He has said this in an exclusive interview with ZNBC news, in advent of the first memorial of former President RUPIAH BANDA, which falls tomorrow, March 11, 2023.

And speaking a seperate interview, University of Zambia -UNZA- Historian, EUSTON CHIPUTA has called on government to increase funding to the National Museums Board and the National Archives of Zambia.

Dr CHIPUTA says this will enable the two institutions to effectively manage the country’s history.

He has added that materials, such as speeches read by former Presidents, during their tenure, should be handed over to relevant institutions for archiving.
