ALMS GIVING ATTRACTING STREET KIDS

By Mark Ziligone :Youth, Sport and Child Development Minister Moses Mawere says giving alms to children on the streets has continued to be a major contributor to their influx on Zambian streets.Mr. Mawere says despite Government discouraging almsgiving, people have continued with the trend which is against the laws of Zambia.He says people should desist from giving money to street kids because it encourages them to continue being on the streets.Mr. Mawere told ZNBC News in Lusaka that people willing to join government to address the influx of street kids should channel their support to Children’s care and orphanages.He also noted that some of the children on the streets have parents who have decided to send them there as tools for income generation.Meanwhile Fountain of Hope President Rodgers Mwewa said there is need to come up with a proper strategy to address the influx of street kids in Lusaka and other towns.Mr. Mwewa who is also founder of the organisation has expressed concern over the number of street kids that has continued to increase despite several interventions by Government.He said Government should join hands with non-governmental organisations and come up with ways to help street kids.Mr. Mwewa said some street kids are now indulging in sexual activities and having children on the streets.Meanwhile 15-year-old street kid, Prince Bwalya has appealed to various stakeholders in the country to help those that are willing to go back to school.Bwalya said not all street kids have lost their dream to become important members of society.He said street kids pass through a tough time in their lives especially where to find shelter during the night.
