Allow ZESCO To Revise Electricity Tariffs-Energy Expert Urges Government

By Patricia Mbewe

Energy expert, Johnstone Chikwanda is appealing to government to allow Zesco to revise the electricity tariffs.

Mr. Chikwanda says the extent of the energy poverty that the country has found itself in was not foreseen when government suspended the electricity tariff review application brought by Zesco.

Mr. Chikwanda who is also Chairperson of Energy Forum Zambia has told Phoenix News that in as much as it may not have been foreseen that the water levels in Lake Kariba would fall to this extent, he feels the situation has become worse from the time the suspension of the tariff was announced four months ago.

He has in this vain called on government to lift the suspension to some extent even just for a few months until Lake Kariba gets enough water.

Mr. Chikwanda explains that while government`s effort to import 300 MegaWatts of power is welcome as it will reduce the energy poverty level from 8 hours to 6 hours, the 6 hours of energy poverty is still high not just for small business but for households as well.
