Lusaka, September 18, 2024 — The Advocates for Democratic Governance Foundation (ADEG) has called for a peaceful and high voter turnout in tomorrow’s by-elections in Kabalenge and Chidi Wards, located in Mwansabombwe and Zimba Districts.
Gideon Musonda, Executive Director of ADEG, urged all registered voters to participate in the elections, emphasizing the importance of democratic engagement.
“A high turnout ensures citizens’ voices are heard and helps shape local governance,” Musonda said.
ADEG also stressed the need for all stakeholders, including political parties and supporters, to follow the Electoral Code of Conduct and ensure a peaceful process. The foundation called on the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) to strictly enforce electoral rules and safeguard the integrity of the election.
“We urge the ECZ to prevent misconduct and ensure a transparent election,” Musonda added.
Recalling violence during the Njame and Liumena Ward by-elections in July, ADEG called on the Zambia Police to provide adequate security at polling stations and totalling centres to prevent disruptions.
“We cannot afford a repeat of the violence seen in previous by-elections,” Musonda warned.
The by-elections are critical for local representation, and ADEG emphasized the responsibility of all stakeholders to uphold peace and democratic values throughout the process.
