In order to diversify the Zambian economy and promote the tourism sector, government is developing the Northern Tourism Circuit that includes Luapula, Northern side and part of Muchinga Provinces.

In Samfya district of Luapula Province, 49 year old Living Bupe has responded to this vision by setting up a crafts business.
From K13, 000, Filekefye Crafts Centre was born.

Mr. Bupe a teacher of English and Religious Education at Samfya Secondary School explains that while on a tour of Livingstone, he thought of replicating what he saw there in Samfya.

In an interview with Phoenix News, Mr. Bupe discloses that the prosperity of his business solely depends on the time government’s effort to open the Northern Tourism Circuit begins to yield benefits.

Mr. Bupe explains that at the moment, passion is the reason he is enduring in his business as the proceeds are nothing to talk about.

Just like every other business, Filekefye Crafts Centre has also faced its own share of challenges.

Chief among the challenges faced is the failure to support the business by a few locals in Samfya who have related some of the products to witchcraft.

As government continues with its determination to make Zambia a leading tourist destination and create jobs, contribute to economic development and poverty reduction, crafts too can be included.

Living Bupe has set up Filekefye Crafts Centre whose target is to ensure that visitors to Samfya do not leave without a souvenir.
