Lusaka, Zambia24 (3-07-2025) – In. a pivotal moment for Zambian politics, a coalition of former political leaders, including ministers and members of parliament, has come together to launch the Zambia We Want (ZWW) party.
Professor Patrick Kalifungwa, Vice Chancellor of LIUTEBM University and interim Chairperson of ZWW, told journalists at the Media briefing this morning that the new political entity aims to redefine governance in Zambia through a commitment to transparency, accountability, and inclusive participation.
Prof. Kalifungwa said at the heart of ZWW’s mission lies a fervent dedication to democratic principles.
“Unlike traditional parties often centralized around a single figure, ZWW advocates for the diffusion of power among its members,” explained
Prof. Kalifungwa emphasized this point, asserting that the party’s leadership will be rotational and devoid of personal ambitions or undue influence from any singular founder or funder.
He explained that that the Chairperson will be ineligible to run for the presidency or serve as a running mate for at least two years post-election.
“ZWW envisions a Zambia where strong institutions replace current weaknesses, where resources are equitably distributed, and where corruption is significantly reduced,” he observed.
“Central to this vision is the integration of citizens into economic activities through initiatives like Domestic Cooperative Investment (DCI) in key sectors such as agriculture, livestock, mining, and tourism,” observed.
“This approach aims not only to stimulate economic growth but also to ensure that benefits are widely shared among Zambia’s populace,” he added.
Critical to ZWW’s platform Prof. Kalifungwa suggested, is the empowerment of watchdog bodies such as the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) and the Financial Intelligence Centre (FIC).
“These institutions, often hindered by systemic challenges, will receive enhanced support to enable them to operate effectively and independently,” explained.
Furthermore, Prof. Kalifungwa explained the ZWW pledges to uphold citizens’ rights to freedom of expression, assembly, and enterprise, fostering an environment where meritocracy and integrity in public service appointments prevail.
Prof. Kalifungwa issued a compelling call to all skilled and passionate Zambians to join ZWW in its quest for national renewal.
“The party seeks not just to contest elections, but to fundamentally transform Zambia into a beacon of governance excellence and citizen-centric leadership,” added.
It was Prof kalifungwa’s considered view that the launch of Zambia We Want represents more than just the emergence of a new political entity; it embodies a vision for a brighter, more equitable future.
With its unwavering commitment to democratic values, inclusive governance, and economic empowerment, he observed, the ZWW offers a compelling alternative to the status quo, promising a pathway to prosperity that embraces the aspirations of all Zambians.
He said in the coming months and years, the nation will undoubtedly watch closely as Zambia We Want charts its course.
Richwell Siamunene, former Defense Minister, emphasized the need for transparency, accountability, and unity in Zambia’s governance.
He questioned the benefits of significant financial resources flowing into the country and called for addressing mismanagement to ensure development.
Siamunene urged citizens to prioritize national interests and responsible governance to secure Zambia’s future, concluding with a plea for love and unity as essential for the country’s prosperity.
Similarly, Bob Sichonga, former Minister of Commerce, Trade, and Industry, echoed and highlighted the need for addressing current challenges through thorough exploration of potential solutions.
He emphasized constitutional amendments for balanced power distribution and a mature democratic system, the role of institutions in promoting collective responsibility, and a clear, long-term plan for political, social, and economic policies.
Sichonga announced the establishment of a new political party, “His Zambia,” focusing on honest debates and consolidating diverse ideas without allegiance to any individual or privileged group, prioritizing citizen interests over personal agendas.
Major Francis Kamanga, a key figure in the “Zambia We Want” (ZWW) initiative, unveiled a detailed roadmap for the organization’s activities, emphasizing transparent political engagement and inviting Zambians to join and demonstrate their capabilities.
Kamanga stressed the inclusive nature of ZWW, distinguishing it from traditional political entities by fostering open discussions without fear of retribution.
He outlined a comprehensive plan, including popularization and recruitment meetings, the formal launch of “The Zambia You Want” party, and the preparation for the National Congress.
Kamanga assured that positions would be based on merit and capability, extending an open invitation to all Zambians regardless of financial status, aiming to engage citizens from all walks of life in shaping the country’s future.
