4,998 cases of GBV were reported countrywide during the first quarter of 2016, Police say

POLICE says 4,998 cases of Gender Based Violence have been reported countrywide during the first quarter of 2016 compared to 4,615 cases reported in the first quarter of 2015.

Police deputy spokesperson Rae Hamoonga in a statement stated that 703 cases of child defilement were also reported countrywide representing 14.1 per cent out of 4,998 cases reported in 2016

“There were 4,998 cases of Gender Based Violence reported countrywide during the first quarter of 2016 compared to 4,615 cases Gender Based Violence reported in the first quarter of 2015. This translates in an increase of 383 cases giving a percentage of 7.7 per cent. 701 cases were against girls while two cases were against boys. Lusaka Province recorded the highest number of defilement cases with 365 representing 52 per cent while Copperbelt Province recorded 69, Central Province recorded 55 cases while Western Province recorded the least cases of defilement with nine cases,” Mr. Hamoonga stated.

“Further, the country recorded 13 murder cases out of which six victims were women, six men, and one boy. Furthermore, a total of 1,567 cases of Assault OABH (occasioning bodily harm) were reported representing 31.4 per cent and this translates to a 4.6 per cent reduction of reported cases in 2015 first quarter which was 1,666. Out of the reported 1,567 Assault AOBH cases in the first quarter of 2016, 1,136 were women victims while 431 were men victims. This means that 72.5 per cent were women victims and 27.5 per cent representing men victims.”

Mr. Hamoonga stated that Lusaka Province recorded the highest number of assault OABH cases with 340 in Lusaka, followed by Copperbelt with 294; Central Province recorded 292 cases while Southern Province recorded the least number of Assault cases with 54.

“Three cases of human trafficking were also recorded out of which one was female and two were girls. Other cases such as failing to provide for necessities of life reported were 585 and neglecting to provide recording 209 cases representing 11.7 per cent and 4.2 per cent of the reported cases respectively. This entails a reduction in reported cases of failing to provide for necessities of life with 3.3 per cent and for neglecting to provide necessities registering reduction of 4.4 per cent,” he stated.

“There are 720 cases out of 4,998 reported cases that went to court during the first quarter of 2016 and this represents 14.4 per cent of the reported cases. Out of this figure, 113 resulted in conviction, eight acquittals and 91 cases were withdrawn while 508 are still pending in court. Further, 1,697 cases are pending and under investigations at various Police Stations in the country while 2,581 cases were withdrawn from the Police Stations. The withdrawals came about one count of insufficient evidence, withdrawals by the complainants, false on inquiry and closed undetected.”
