By Francis Maingaila
Lusaka, Zambia24 (09-07-2024) – The Smart Zambia Institute (SZI) has achieved significant milestones in its mission to spearhead Zambia’s digital transformation efforts, advancing economic activities, job creation, and social inclusion.

Percy Chinyama, the National Coordinator of SZI, told journalists at a media briefing that the institute plays a pivotal role in driving economic growth through robust digitization initiatives.

He stated that central to their mandate is prioritizing digital solutions to elevate Zambia’s economy.

Chinyama emphasized the importance of accessible, affordable, and sustainable digital solutions, noting that investments in digitization yield significant returns and are instrumental in achieving national development goals.

He underscored the collective responsibility of stakeholders, including government staff and journalists, in communicating progress and ensuring transparency during digital transformation efforts.

Chinyama outlined the government’s priorities: economic growth, job creation, and social inclusion.

He explained that partnerships with private sector development companies are essential for achieving these objectives.

According to Chinyama, collaborative training programs improve understanding of government processes and aid in the development of future digital systems.

He mentioned efforts underway to localize institutions by hiring more developers and integrating technology education into national curricula, fostering a skilled workforce for Zambia’s digital economy.

He stated that social inclusion initiatives involve transforming post offices across Zambia into digital transformation centers, delivering high-speed internet to remote areas, and generating employment opportunities in provinces such as Luapula and Western, where trained staff provide citizen support services.

“Digitization efforts have significantly enhanced access to government services, enabling people to apply for licenses and access vital services online, thereby saving time and money while empowering citizens to invest in sectors like agriculture,” he added.

Chinyama noted that the transformation of services provided by entities such as the Ministry of Mines aims to enhance efficiency and inclusivity in service delivery, ensuring equitable benefits for all Zambians.

Looking forward, the Smart Zambia Institute is collaborating with global partners, including World Life, to launch projects like a national digital ID system.

“The Smart Care initiative aims to digitize health records in 1,000 facilities nationwide, ensuring continuity of care and efficiency in health service delivery,” explained the spokesperson.

Chinyama highlighted that despite challenges such as legal impediments and inconsistent power supply, efforts are underway to streamline legal processes and secure alternative power sources.

Chinyama concluded by stressing the importance of community support and understanding in driving these initiatives forward.

He said transparent communication and public engagement are crucial as Zambia continues on its path of digital transformation, promising to modernize governance, stimulate economic growth, and foster inclusive development across the nation.
