“Urgent Call for Implementation of ATI Law”

Lusaka, Zambia24 (18-04-2024) – The Access to Information coalition is urging immediate implementation of Zambia’s recently enacted access to information law to benefit citizens.

Guess Nyirenda, Coalition vice president, emphasized the paramount importance of access to information for democracy, citizen empowerment, and transparency in governance during a media briefing.

Despite the law’s enactment, Nyirenda highlighted the urgent need for operationalizing it through a statutory instrument to fulfill citizens’ rights.

Nyirenda stressed collaboration among stakeholders for effective implementation of the law, emphasizing transparency, accountability, and the rule of law for a democratic society.

The ATI Coalition reaffirms its commitment to advocating for the law’s operationalization, making access to information a reality for all Zambians.

Nyirenda acknowledged the roles of MISA Zambia and the ATI Coalition in enacting the Access to Information Bill, underscoring the urgent need for action to fully operationalize it.

“Collaboration among stakeholders, including government officials, civil society organizations, the media, and citizens, is deemed crucial for success,” he said.

According to Nyirenda transparency and accountability are fundamental for democracy, requiring collective dedication to the rule of law.

It was Nyirenda’s consodered view continuous advocacy by the ATI Coalition is essential to ensure access to information for all Zambians, emphasizing citizens’ right to information for empowerment and transparent governance.
