Zambia Railways Limited-ZRL says it has created over 400 direct jobs through the formation of 11 cooperatives.

And, Zambia Railways Infrastructure Regional Engineer for Central region KELLINESS ULAYA says the cooperatives have been quick to respond to emergencies which have led to improved maintenance of the railways.

Speaking to the media in Lusaka, Mrs. ULAYA said the cooperatives have also been beneficial as there is improved efficiency, and cost savings.

Meanwhile, Cooperative Representative ACKSON KAYAMBWE said cooperative members have been able to generate more income through works on the railways.

For several years ZRL was using contractors to provide labour for truck maintenance however due to poor performances, in 2018 ZRL formed cooperatives after extensive consultations with stakeholders.
