GBV worries Govt
By Sharon Siame
Government is concerned with the different forms in which Gender Based Violence -GBV- is manifesting itself.
Information and Media Minister CORNELIUS MWEETWA says Government is concerned that women in leadership are being judged with a yardstick of gender.
Mr. MWEETWA says it is unacceptable that Speaker of the National Assembly NELLY MUTTI should be treated in the manner she has been.
He has called on all stakeholders to voice out on GBV and other issues affecting women.
The Information Minister said this when he officially opened a GBV Indaba organised by the Non Governmental Gender Organisations Coordinating Council -NGOCC- in Lusaka.
And Mr. MWEETWA said progress has been made to ensure that the Gender Equity and Equality Act Number 22 of 2015 is brought into fruition.
NGOCC Board Chairperson GRACE SINKAMBA said GBV negatively impacts the nation, especially women and girls.
Ms. SINKAMBA said the increased reported cases of GBV should be of concern to all stakeholders as latest statistics demonstrate how much of a crisis the scourge has become.
Meanwhile, Young Women’s Christian Association National Chapter President PATRICIA MUBANGA called for establishment of more shelters for victims of GBV in the country.
