51 HOUSES: WITNESS TELLS COURT HE SPOKE TO THE OWNER

By Hector Simfukwe-

A witness has told the court that he spoke on the telephone with one of the alleged owners of the infamous 51 houses in Lusaka’s Chalala area before renting one of the houses.

This is in a matter in which CHARLES LOYANA and his wife, SUSAN are charged with concealing and being in possession of properties suspected to be proceeds of crime amounting to about 37.9 Million kwacha.

Mr. LOYANA, a Senior Accountant at the Ministry of Finance and his wife SUSAN an accountant at the Ministry of Works and Supply, are facing two counts of corrupt practices involving concealment and possession of property suspected to be proceeds of crime.

When the matter came up, a witness KAMBALI KALYONTO was challenged to State whether he has ever spoken to the two accused persons to which he said NO.

Mr. LOYANA and his wife were asked to remove their masks so that the witness can state whether he has ever spoken to them or not.

And in response the witness said he has never spoken to the suspects physically but only to a SUSAN SINKALA on the phone.

The witness was further asked if he had call records to prove that he spoke to Ms SINKALA in 2019 which he denied.

He told the court that the Tenants agreement he was given to sign also had a name SUSAN SINKALA on it.

Mr. KALYONTO told the Court that he used to make payment for the House to a Mr. BRUCE who had receipts that were already signed.

He also said officers from the ACC came to ask for the name of the landlord and informed him that the House he was living in was under investigation.

Mr. KALYONTO said the ACC officer asked him to be making payment for rent to ACC and not to the property owner.

The witness also denied the assertion by the defense that he was told what to say in court.
