JOURNALISTS TOASTS THEIR DAYÂ
By Hannock Kasama:This year’s Press Freedom Day has been marked with a dark cloud as 50 Journalists worldwide have died due to the Novel Coronavirus disease -Covid 19.The Media Institute for Southern Africa-Misa Zambia says according to the †Press Emblem Campaign “Covid-19 has killed the 50 journalists worldwide since March 2020.Chairperson Hellen Mwale however says Zambian journalists and their counterparts all over the world have played a big role in the dissemination of information on how to fight the spread of COVID -19.Ms. Mwale was speaking in Lusaka before flagging off the donation of Covid-19 Personal Protective Equipment to some media Organisations as a way to commemorate the World Press Freedom Day.At the same occasion 2020 World Press Freedom Day Chairperson Felistus Chipako appealed to government to enact laws that would enhance press freedom.Ms. Chipako also called for concerted efforts to stop violence on media personnel especially as the nation conducts general elections next year.And Media Liaison Committee Chairperson Enock Ngoma called on media houses to uphold laws that guide their operations.Mr. Ngoma said the move will prevent closures of some media houses by authorities.
