UNZA, UNZALARU RECOGNITION TERMINATED

By Mwila Nsofu:The Ministry of Labour has terminated the recognition agreement between the University of Zambia and the University of Zambia Lecturers and Researchers Union -UNZALARU.Acting Labour Commissioner Mukamasole Kasanda says the recognition agreement has been terminated following UNZALARU, unbridled insults on UNZA Management.Mrs. Kasanda says in 2018, when there was a similar situation, UNZALARU was given a last warning and was accorded advised to desist from engaging in the future illegal activities that contravened the law and Recognition Agreement.This is according to a letter dated, February 4th, 2020 and addressed to the UNZA Registrar and UNZALARU General Secretary and made available to ZNBC News.The Acting Labour Commissioner said that after a hearing on January 22nd, 2020, the Ministry has concluded beyond doubt that the Union violated section Six of the industrial and Labour Relations Act chapter 269  of the laws of Zambia.Mrs. Kasanda said the Union also breached article 18 of the Recognition Agreement between UNZA Management and the Union.She said the application to terminate the Recognition Agreement has since been approved in accordance to section 65 A (3) (a) of the industrial and Labour Relations Act Chapter 269 as amended by the Act Number 8 of 2008 of the laws of Zambia.And, Ministry of Labour Permanent Secretary Chanda Kaziya has also confirmed the termination of the Recognition agreement to ZNBC News in a telephone interview.Mr. Kaziya said the termination does not entail that UNZALARU has stopped existing  but the recognition agreement between UNZA Management that has been cancelled.
