Jehovah’s Witness call on Zambia to help

THE African Association of Jehovah’s Witness has called upon Zambia to help resolve a matter affecting its members in Eritrea.
Zambia’s Ambassador to Ethiopia and Permanent Representative to the African Union His Excellency Emmanuel Mwamba said Zambia would collaborate with ambassadors from the Inter-governmental Authority on Development (IGAD) and the East African Community (ECA) based in Addis Ababa to see how the matter could be handled and resolved.
He said Zambia is a Christian nation which tolerates other faiths and promoted the principle of amicable co-existence in religious diversity.
He said it was important that Africa resolved its own issues using Africa’s own tested methods and mechanisms.
He said this had to be done while respecting the sovereignty and dignity of Eritrea.
He said it was for this reason that he would engage the African Union Commission and other ambassadors from the Region on the matter to seek the intervention of the African Union.
And Mr. Alan Gallina of the Jehovah’s Witness from World Headquarters in Washington together with Mr. Girmay Tewolde and Mr. Derloy Williamson of the African Association of Jehovah’s Witness, sought help from Zambia to help free members of the Congregation who have been imprisoned in Eritrea.
He said Zambia and other African countries could help persuade Eritrea to make their Faith legal once again.
He said the Church was encouraged to approach Zambia as they have over 200,000 members in the country.
He said the Church admired Zambia’s Christian status but more so the manner in which it tolerated other religions.
He said that it was for this reason that the Church was seeking Zambia’s active help on the matter.
On 25th October 1994, the Eritrean government revoked citizenship of members of the Jehovah’s Witness for their refusal to participate in the Referendum and the call for National Service.
Since then their leaders and followers have been imprisoned some as long as 25 years.
This is according to a press statement issued by Inutu Mupango Mwanza, First Secretary (Press & Tourism) at the Zambia Embassy in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
